How to Cite an Encyclopedia in Print in MLA

Be sure to include the name of author (if given), the name of the article, the name of the reference book, the edition, and the year of publication.

Structure:

Last, First M. “Article Title.” Encyclopedia Name, Publisher, Year, Published, Page(s).

Example:

McGhee, Karen, and George McKay. “Insects.” Encyclopedia of Animals, National Geographic Society, 2007 pp. 170-71.

How to Cite an Encyclopedia Online in MLA

Format:

Last, First M. “Article Title.” Encyclopedia Name, Publisher, Year Published, page numbers. Website Title, URL.

Example:

Hassler, Warren W. “American Civil War.” Encyclopedia Britannica, Encyclopedia Britannica Inc, 2017, pp. 56-87. Encyclopedia Britannica Online, www.britannica.org/definitions-american-civil-war.

 

Make sure to:

  • Include the URL for entries found online.
  • Include advanced publication information if available, ie. edition number, volume number, etc.
