There’s no time like the present to learn how to cite a memorial inscription. From the Washington Monument to the Lincoln Memorial, there are many famous locations across the country dedicated to the presidents who have served our nation.

Below, we’ve explained how to cite a memorial inscription in MLA, APA, and Chicago style format. For each style, we’ve included a citation for one of the inscriptions on the Lincoln Memorial as an example.

To cite the Lincoln Memorial inscription or a similar source, you should make note of the following pieces of information:

  1. Name of the author of the inscription
  2. Inscription title (if available) or a description of the inscription
  3. Title or name of the monument
  4. Date for when the inscription was made/unveiled
  5. Monument location
  6. Date you viewed/accessed the inscription information
